With good management of a small woodland, we can actually
improve on nature by producing more ‘edge’ habitat (or ‘ecotone’). There
is more biodiversity (number of species) where two habitats meet, for
example grassland and woodland, than in each of those habitats themselves.
A small woodland often contains trees all of the same age, so there is a
canopy of the same height, casting a shadow that prevents ground flora or
re-growth. A management regime consisting of felling, thinning and
re-planting creates an edge ecosystem from high canopy right down to
grass.

Here at Llyn Wood Product we use two main ways of seasoning timber, Natural (Air) and Artificial (Kiln) drying. Both methods require the timber be stacked and separated to allow the full circulation flow of air, etc. around the stack. Air Seasoning. Air seasoning is the method used with the timber stacked in the open air. Further seasoning needs to be done inside, in heated and ventilated buildings. Kiln Seasoning. There are two main methods used in artificial seasoning, compartmental, and progressive. Both methods rely on the controlled environment to dry out the timber. Describing different woods has always been flawed by variations within any group of species. The variations of exact species, geographic, region, microclimates and soil type all have a bearing on the end product. Add to this the "man made" variants of sawing, air seasoning, kilning, grading, etcetera and anyone will quickly realise that there is more to buying timber than just asking the price. We will gladly asnswer your questions in relation to the woods that we use.
